Joseph T. Stapleton is a partner in the Corporate Section of the Business Department at Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, LLP. His practice includes general corporate and finance matters, as well as copyright and trademark matters, and other intellectual property law issues. He is regularly involved in drafting and negotiating software licenses, software development contracts, research and development agreements and consulting contracts. He is a member of the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Group and co-chairs the firm's Technology Law Group.
Before joining the Firm in 1983, Mr. Stapleton served a two-year judicial clerkship with the Honorable Donald W. Van Artsdalen of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Stapleton is vice chairman of the firm's Pro Bono Committee and serves on the firm's Professional Responsibility and Audit Committees. He is a member of the Advisory Board of Esperanza Health Center. He is also a member of the Philadelphia Police Advisory Commission. He is a former director and officer of the Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness. Mr. Stapleton currently serves on the Board of St. Martin de Porres School and is a volunteer at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Mr. Stapleton is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Association of Bond Lawyers.
Mr. Stapleton is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He is licensed to practice in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Mr. Stapleton earned a B.A. degree in English from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania in 1977. He received a J.D. degree in 1981 from Villanova University School of Law, where he served as a Case and Comment Editor for the Villanova Law Review.
