Charles B. Casper

Senior Counsel

Charles B. Casper is chair of Montgomery McCracken's Class Action Defense Practice Group. His practice emphasizes the defense of consumer and antitrust class actions, computer software and hardware litigation, insurance coverage litigation, complex commercial litigation and environmental litigation.

Since 1993, Chuck has served as class action counsel to Microsoft Corporation in class actions in federal and state courts across the country, including consumer and indirect-purchaser antitrust class actions.

Courts in California, Washington, New York, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Alabama and Colorado have dismissed nationwide class actions on motion or denied nationwide class certification in cases involving Microsoft's most widely used software, hardware and services: Windows Vista, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 98, Windows 95 (two cases), MS-DOS 6.0 (three cases), the Microsoft Network (MSN) (five cases), Xbox (four cases) and Zune. Courts in Michigan and Maine denied statewide class certification in three indirect-purchaser antitrust cases challenging Microsoft Windows and Office. Several of these cases have resulted in published opinions.

Chuck has also represented companies and their directors in a variety of other industries including computer hardware and software, pharmaceuticals, health care, retailing, heavy truck manufacturing, lease financing, and alarm systems in class actions and significant individual cases.

He also serves as an editor of the Firm's Ahead of the Class blog, which focuses on issues related to class action defense, addressing current cases and decisions, trends and strategies associated with class action law.

Chuck was previously a member of the Firm's Management Committee.

Chuck received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1977 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1974. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, awarded in 1985.
