John H. Lewis, Jr. has won jury trials and bench trials in complex multiparty, multijurisdictional cases involving the following issues: securities fraud; patent infringement; professional liability; corporate reorganization; public utility; bankruptcy; commercial contract; and product liability. He also has extensive experience in the defense of class actions and in the management of litigation raising the same issue in multiple state and federal jurisdictions and in international arbitration pursuant to NAFTA. His current practice also includes First Amendment law, class action defense, receivership litigation and securities fraud litigation.

John received national attention as the lead lawyer who recovered more than $50 million in a jury trial and settlements for the liquidator of a mutual fund, in litigation arising out of the activities of Robert Vesco’s control of the IOS mutual funds. He also directed the successful defense of a corporation in hundreds of cases in state and federal court throughout the United States over the presence of asbestos in public buildings. In a case brought by the State of Maryland for all Maryland public buildings containing asbestos, John obtained a complete defense jury verdict. His class action experience includes, among others, a case where he was chief counsel for a major oil company and liaison counsel for 13 other oil company defendants in a massive antitrust class action brought on behalf of gasoline station dealers. In 2006, he won a $32.7 million jury verdict against a bank and brokerage firm for aiding and abetting a securities Ponzi scheme.

Prior to joining the firm, John was a senior litigation partner with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP where he served for more than 10 years as head of Morgan’s Litigation Section for all of its offices. In addition, John had been chairman of its Antitrust and Trade Regulation Section, chairman of its Professional Liability Practice Group, and had served as Attorney for the Firm. He also served three terms on Morgan’s Executive Committee and Governing Board.
