Biography

Julie Hofmann Chelius concentrates her practice in the defense of product liability claims, commercial litigation and FDA and FCC regulatory compliance.  She has advised and defended clients in cases involving medical devices and pharmaceuticals, settlement trusts, fire and safety products, and construction materials in class actions, multidistrict and complex litigation matters. She has represented numerous corporations and individuals in various contractual disputes, including co-commercialization, share purchase, procurement, brokerage, and insurance agreements.

Julie has significant regulatory and compliance experience in the pharmaceutical industry and most recently spent a year working as part of the legal regulatory department of a major pharmaceutical company. She conducted compliance review of a broad range of product promotional and training materials, worked closely with the brand and regulatory teams, served on the product labeling team, and participated in FDA advisory meeting preparations. She also served as counsel on the Privacy Implementation Review Team, reviewing promotions and communications for compliance with privacy statutes and regulations.

Julie has served as a member of the firm’s Management Committee and Diversity Committee and as a personnel partner to the firm.

Selected Representations

  • Defended Phen-Fen Diet Drug Settlement Trust in U.S. District Court (E.D. Pa.) in connection with audits of compensation claims for heart damage.
  • Obtained jury verdict in favor of medical device manufacturer in Delaware Superior Court on product liability claim in connection with orthopedic implant.
  • Served as counsel for drug manufacturer of generic product in Baycol Litigation in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, Mass Tort Program.
  • Served as counsel for medical device manufacturers in defense of product liability claims with respect to various implanted products, including artificial hips, knees, intramedullary devices, infusion pumps, and pelvic mesh.
  • Defended employer against claim for violations of FLSA.
  • Assisted Court-appointed Special Master in conducting investigation and drafting report for Federal District Court in connection with allegations of attorney misconduct in Class Action settlement relating to health insurance.

Julie graduated, cum laude, with a J.D. degree from Harvard University Law School in Cambridge, Mass. She graduated, summa cum laude, with an A.B. degree in English from Duke University in Durham, N.C. A member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society, she received the Angier B. Duke academic scholarship.
