Brown vs. Board of Education marked the end of legal segregation in schools in 1954.

It was quickly followed with decisions outlawing segregation in public accommodations.

But it was not the end by any means.

In Jacksonville, we didn’t know anything about the legal end of segregation in 1954.

We were living in an alternate universe.

Over the three years following Brown, Jacksonville built a number of new, all-white schools named for Confederate generals: Jackson, Davis, Kirby Smith, Stuart.
