SUMMARY:State Charitable Solicitation Statutes: Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask
DESCRIPTION:Montgomery McCracken partners Don Kramer and Karl Emerson will present the “State Charitable Solicitation Statutes: Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask” webinar.\n \n\nCharities that seek contributions nationally must typically register in 39 states and the District of Columbia before starting to solicit. Furthermore\, for-profit fundraisers are also required to register and file their contracts and other documentation with many states. Since many states are increasing their enforcement efforts to ensure that charities and fundraisers are complying with initial and annual registration requirements\, it’s important that charities and fundraisers abide by these statutes-especially since noncompliance can result in the imposition of significant fines and penalties.\n \n\nClick here to register for the webinar.\n \n\nOctober 17\, 2013 at 1:30 PM – 3:00 AM

SUMMARY:Defending the White Collar Case
DESCRIPTION:Partner Ellen Brotman is serving as course planner and chairman Richard Scheff is participating as faculty for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute’s “Defending the White Collar Case.”\n \n\nThe F.B.I. defines white collar crime as “a full range of frauds committed by business and government professionals.” These offenses can range from minor benefits fraud to sophisticated Ponzi schemes\, and include the non-filing taxpayer as well as the complicated tax shelter promotion. While each case requires subject matter expertise\, the successful defense of white collar cases hinges on a combination of skill\, creativity and judgment. These offenses present special challenges: the issues are complex\, the documents are confusing and often voluminous and the press coverage may be helping the prosecutor persuade your jurors before you even get a chance to meet them. The lawyers who regularly handle such cases understand that they involve corporate and individual defendants who are targeted as much for who they are as for what they did and their lives\, careers and corporate existence are on the line.\n \n\nThis program will examine the substantive and procedural nuances of white collar defense. Topics will explore the white collar case from investigation through appeal; each panel will offer legal updates as well as provide nuts and bolts advice and techniques for each stage of the case.\n \n\nFebruary 18\, 2014 at 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM \n\nCLE Credits : 7.5\nDownload Event Attachment \nThe CLE Conference Center\, Wanamaker BuildingPhiladelphia

SUMMARY:Nonprofit Mergers\, Acquisitions and Affiliations
DESCRIPTION:With pressure mounting on nonprofits to consider affiliations with other organizations\, this webinar is designed to help you better navigate the world of mergers\, acquisitions and affiliations.  Unlike the corporate world\, there are no financial “matchmakers” to help nonprofits identify successful partners for a merger.\n \n\nThis program will discuss the differences between mergers\, acquisitions\, affiliations\, strategic alliances\, and takeovers. It will discuss various alternative legal structures and the kind of “due diligence” investigation appropriate in considering any new relationship. It will discuss the types of procedures necessary to accomplish the goals\, including the possible requirement for approval from the Attorney General.\n \n\nThrough a series of hypothetical examples\, we will put these considerations in context for discussion in real life situations so that participants considering any new alliance can weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the alternatives.\n \n\nPresented by Montgomery McCracken attorneys Donald Kramer\, editor of Nonprofit Issues® in partnership with the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations and Virginia P. Sikes\, tax editor of Nonprofit Issues®\, will also participate in the discussion.\n \n\nParticipants will receive a package of materials from Nonprofit Issues® and will have the opportunity to ask questions during the presentation. Any number of persons may participate at the same location for the same low price. Similar webinars are offered at more than twice the cost. For more details and to register\, visit nonprofitissues.com.\n \n\nMarch 12\, 2014 at 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM

SUMMARY:The Connecticut Maritime Association Presents Shipping 2014
DESCRIPTION:The United States is fast becoming the world’s leading producer of energy. Faced with punishing bunker prices and inadequate freight rates\, vessel speed is the key delta for capacity growth. Environmental regulations are rapidly changing ship design and operation. Technological solutions are dizzying in number and selection. Successful tapping of capital markets rewards an omnivore’s tastes and a sprinters aptitude. A swiftly spreading rumor could spike Interest rates while the political climate in the Middle East changes faster than Vermont Spring weather. ECA zone deadlines shift distillates from a cargo to a fuel overnight. Transfer of data and information between ships and markets is instantaneous. Freight volatility snaps heads like a whiplash. ECO ship designs multiply like “juiced ” cells. Social media has altered a 24/7 industry into a perpetual 1440 minute dash. A twenty five year ship is considered old at fifteen\, yet can move faster than the younger new deliveries. Ton-miles are shorter today…or are they?\n \n\nWhether we like it or not the pace of change in the shipping industry has never been greater. In a world of shifting trade\, global economic health\, oil production and consumption and new technology\, decision making is pressurized. Stakes are rising.\n \nPartner Fred J. Kuffler will present “Port of Refuge: A Continuing Problem for the Industry” in this multi-dimensional conference. \n\nMarch 17\, 2014 at 2:00 PM – March 19\, 2014 at 5:00 PM \n\nwww.shipping2014.com\nDownload Event Attachment \nHilton Stamford HotelStamford\, Connecticut
