DESCRIPTION:Nonprofit Issues® and Montgomery McCracken will present the 23rd annual “This Year in Nonprofit Law” on Thursday\, November 7\, 2013. The seminar will bring you up to date with the most important legal issues affecting nonprofits in the last year.  The program will provide 5 hours of continuing legal education credit for lawyers in Pennsylvania and 5 hours of continuing professional education credit for accountants. \nThe morning will offer two sessions:\n \n\n\nKatherina Rosqueta\, founding Executive Director of the Center for High Impact Philanthropy will provide the keynote presentation on one of the hottest topics in nonprofit enterprise. What do we mean by impact? On whom? How do we measure it? How do we improve it? And when should we fund it?\n \n\n“This Year in Nonprofit Law”\nPanel of  Montgomery McCracken lawyers who deal with nonprofit legal issues every day reviewing the most important legal developments for nonprofits during the last year.\n \n\n\nFollowing lunch\, there will be two concurrent sessions\, each offering three topics from which to choose:\n \n\nConcurrent Session #1\n \n\n\nAvoiding the brink – Tools to help a turnaround\nDonald Kramer will moderate a panel consisting of consultants Joel Smith of J.F. Smith Associates\, and Marc Sobel of JM Zell Partners\, Ltd\, and Joseph O’Neil of Montgomery McCracken discussing key ways to cut costs\, improve income\, restructure debt\, and deal with other issues peculiar to nonprofit turnarounds.\n \n\nWhat non-union employees need to know about the NLRA – And there’s a lot\nMMWR Employment Law Department Chair Daniel O’Meara will discuss the National Labor Relations Board’s increasing regulation of non-union employers and non-union workplaces under the National Labor Relations Act and what employers should be doing about it.\n \n\nMaking the most of bequests\nScott Meyer of MMWR’s Trusts and Estates group\, will outline techniques to help improve the amounts available for charity from testimonial gifts.\n \n\n\nConcurrent Session #2\n \n\n\nWhat you need to know about the Affordable Care Act now\nGregory Fox\, chair of MMWR’s Business Department\, will update employers and employees on the current status of implementation of the Affordable Care Act and steps that need to be taken now or in the near future to comply with the law.\n \n\nCopyright law\, fair use and the Internet\nJoseph Stapleton\, IP lawyer in MMWR’s Business Department\, will focus on the challenges faced by users of the Internet in trying to figure out how to navigate the fine line between fair use and infringement.
