Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads LLP reeled in a partner and associate for its transportation practice from Cichanowicz Callan Keane Vengrow & Textor LLP, the firm announced Tuesday, further expanding the firm’s transportation and maritime practice in its New York office.
The firm’s newest partner Stephen H. Vengrow adds 40 years of experience in maritime law, including at the Office of General Counsel the Federal Maritime Commission, with practice experience ranging from cargo claims to personal injury litigation to bankruptcy proceedings, according to the firm’s announcement. Vengrow has also developed a reputation for handling cases involving illegal carriage of drugs on vessels and stowaways, the firm said.
The associate, Eric Chang, brings experience defending claims for lost cargo as well as claims for intermodal and rail transport, the firm said.
In an email statement, Vengrow, who also served as in-house counsel for SeaLand, said he was thrilled to join a firm that had established itself as a leader in the maritime and transportation industries, particularly with its efforts in encouraging teamwork.
“When I first arrived, I was impressed with Montgomery McCracken on a number of levels. In particular, not just the mere talk of teamwork but the firm’s aptitude in promoting collegiality and teamwork,” the email said.
Vengrow also added that the firm’s recent work has made a mark.
“In the last four years, I have been extremely impressed with the high caliber of talent the firm has brought on board and I look forward to joining the team,” he said.
Vincent M. DeOrchis and John J. Levy, the co-chairs of the firm’s maritime and transportation group, said in a statement they were happy to bring Chang and Vengrow onboard, and hinted at more additions in the future.
“We are continuing to expand the capabilities of Montgomery McCracken’s Maritime and Transportation Practice Group, having grown significantly over the past 10 years, with prospects for additional growth in the next few months. Steve’s and Eric’s combined depth and experience add to the great talent we have,” the statement said.
The transportation group at Montgomery McCracken, a firm with more than 120 attorneys in offices in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, works in cargo claims, bankruptcy, corporate advisory and criminal defense areas, among others.
Chang was not immediately available for comment Tuesday.
Vengrow graduated from the George Washington University National Law Center, American University, Washington College of Law. Chang graduated from the Brooklyn Law School.
