Montgomery McCracken partner Evelyn H. McConathy was a speaker at last week’s American Intellectual Property Law Association Spring board and committee chairs meeting held in New York.  McConathy delivered a report on a Congressional Event which she planned and carried out on behalf of the Public Education Committee that she chairs for American Intellectual Property Law Association, in conjunction with US Patent and Trademark Office and the World Intellectual Property Organization, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of World Intellectual Property Day.  The forum entitled World Intellectual Property – Protecting Tomorrow: IP and Green Technology, brought together leaders to discuss current issues and benefits relating to intellectual property in support of green technology.  Its purpose was education, to raise awareness of how patents, copyrights, and trademarks impact daily life and increase an understanding of how the protection of intellectual property rights help promote creativity and innovation.  In addition, 3M, Becton Dickinson, and Hewlett Packard showcased their green technologies at the Event to demonstrate how intellectual property protection has permitted them to bring their inventions to the public and advanced their technologies.

McConathy was responsible for orchestrating the event and delivering some significant voices and decision makers in the laws affecting intellectual property as speakers at the Event, particularly regarding the relationship to green technology.  The Program included Honorable Victoria A. Espinel, IP Enforcement Coordinator; Ambassador Ronald Kirk, United States Trade Representative; Honorable Francisco Sanchez, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade; Honorable David Kappos, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office; Honorable James Pooley, now Deputy Director General for Innovation and Technology, the World Intellectual Property Organization; Honorable Q. Todd Dickinson, Executive Director, American Intellectual Property Law Association, and with the participation of Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who provided the closing remarks.

The event’s standing room only-venue was the Rayburn House Office Building’s Gold Room, call by some ‘the most prestigious room on the Hill.’

McConathy is the chair of the AIPLA’s Public Education Committee, which also maintains a website at “creativityinbloom.org,” providing educational information to the public on the benefits and value of intellectual property through greater understanding of its meaning, and to promote cooperation on this effort with the rest of the IP community.

World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated annually on April 26.
