On March 1, 1912, noted Philadelphia lawyers Owen J. Roberts, William W. Montgomery, Jr., and Charles J. McKeehan founded Roberts, Montgomery & McKeehan, the predecessor of Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads LLP.
These three lawyers, led by Roberts, who would ultimately be confirmed as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court as the only modern-day Philadelphia lawyer to serve on our highest court, were dedicated to providing excellent legal counseling and service to their clients. Their commitment to clients and the profession continues today at Montgomery McCracken.
The attorneys of Roberts, Montgomery, & McKeehan were skillful trial lawyers and seasoned business and finance counselors, representing corporate and individual clients in a variety of complex commercial, estate, and other matters. When, in 1923, McKeehan was appointed as a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the Firm changed its name to Roberts & Montgomery. In 1930, upon Roberts’ confirmation to the Supreme Court, the Firm became Montgomery & McCracken, adding the name of Robert T. McCracken, who had joined the Firm as one of the first associates in 1912 and who would be a leader of the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania legal communities until his death in 1960. In the years that followed, the Firm added corporate and estates lawyer Robert C. Walker and seasoned litigator C. Brewster Rhoads to its name in recognition of their skill and commitment to the Firm and the bar.
While the Firm’s name has changed since 1912, its dedication to its clients and to the community has remained the same. As the Philadelphia region and its economy has evolved over the past 100 years, so too, have the Firm’s representations, from serving as counsel to Philadelphia-based railroad, industrial, and banking institutions, including The Pennsylvania Railroad, The Budd Company, Pennsylvania National Bank, and Celotex Corporation, to representing, among others, some of the nation’s top pharmaceutical, software, retail and financial services clients today.
Montgomery McCracken’s lawyers have a rich history of service to the community. Three former Montgomery McCracken partners have served on the federal bench, including Justice Roberts and Judge McKeehan. The Firm has boasted six Chancellors of the Philadelphia Bar Association, three Presidents of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and numerous Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers, American College of Bankruptcy, and other prestigious legal organizations. During the past 100 years, Montgomery McCracken lawyers have shared an impressive record of serving on boards and in leadership roles of non-profit and civic organizations throughout the city, region, and nation.
