‘Every Firm Is Busy’: Pa.’s Hot Lateral Market Means More Work for Managing Partners, Recruiters

Managing partners are also keeping in closer contact with legal recruiters, and many focusing on Pennsylvania have noticed. However, the recruiters too are running up against limitations in the marketplace.

The lateral hiring market in Pennsylvania is more active than most have ever seen it before, and making sure firms stay competitive means managing partners and legal recruiters are spending more and more time seeking out and wooing talent.

For the past six months, demand for high-end associates has been climbing to the point where now there is more demand for the work than there is talent in the market. As the face of the law firm, that means managing partners and leaders involved in the hiring process have upped the time they spend traveling, and wining and dining, new recruits. Firm leaders are trying new tactics as well.

“Our hiring committee has had to think outside the box to recruit talent,” Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads managing partner Steven Pachman said, noting that the lateral market is as hot as he’s ever seen it.

According to Pachman, Montgomery McCracken went from hiring two partners and two associates last year to three partners and seven associates in 2021. Pachman said the firm anticipates that trend will continue upward.
