Fabiana Pierre-Louis was sworn in Tuesday as the newest member of the New Jersey Supreme Court, officially becoming the first Black female justice in the state’s 224-year history.

A former federal prosecutor who grew up the daughter of Haitian immigrants, Pierre-Louis took the oath during a private ceremony in Trenton. Gov. Phil Murphy, who nominated her in June, was there to look on.
