US imports set to face little VGM scrutiny from Coast Guard

WASHINGTON – If recent trends are an indication, U.S. importers have little reason to be concerned the verified gross mass declarations of containers will be checked the U.S. Coast guard when the SOLAS container weight rule takes effect July 1.

“Carriers are still nervous, not in the sense of what the rule is intended to accomplish, but the logistics of getting it in place so that it doesn’t disrupt operations at the last minute,” Vince DeOrchis, a maritime lawyer with the firm Montgomery McCracken, recently told JOC.com.
