Montgomery McCracken partner John J. Levy will be speaking at the 2016 International Maritime Law Seminar, “Recent Developments in Maritime Law Around the World” in London on October 27, 2016. This year, John will discuss Montgomery McCracken’s victory in obtaining a $71.5 million judgment against CITGO Asphalt Refining Co. and related companies in connection with a 2004 oil spill in the Port of Philadelphia when the M/V Athos I, a tanker chartered by CITGO, was attempting to dock at CITGO’s Paulsboro refinery on the Delaware River. He will discuss the casualty, the oil spill response, the damages incurred, lessons learned and what the decision means for charterers and terminal operators.

The International Maritime Law Seminar is an annual event held in London each year. The half-day seminar will feature 15 speakers from 14 different countries, addressing recent developments in maritime and transport law within their respective jurisdictions. The speakers from the seminar are well-known attorneys from leading maritime firms around the world, and are assisted by moderators who are reputable and well-placed individuals in the marine insurance industry. Moderators for this year’s seminar include Dr. Melis Özdel, Director of UCL Centre for Commercial Law, Nick Tonge, Deputy Director of North of England P&I, and Iain Laird, Vice President of Gard AS (UK).

The International Maritime Law Seminar was started in 2006 under the sponsorship of Montgomery McCracken partner Vincent M. DeOrchis of the United States, as well as Luis de San Simon of Spain and Ricardo Rozas of Chile. Since then, it has grown from a small seminar to one of the most widely anticipated and heavily attended London market legal seminars with attendance of more than 300 London insurance and maritime law specialists.
