Montgomery McCracken is pleased to announce that the Hon. Joel B. Rosen USMJ (ret.) has been awarded the Hon. Jerome B. Simandle Award by the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey. The award will be presented by the Hon. Freda L. Wolfson, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, at the Third Annual Pro Bono Institute on October 23, 2020. The award, which honors the late Chief Judge Jerome B. Simandle, is presented annually to a lawyer and/or jurist who has exemplified exceptional service to the bench and the bar of the New Jersey federal court.

Rosen is senior counsel in the firm’s Litigation Department where he concentrates his practice in alternative dispute resolution and leads the firm’s innovative litigation counseling program provided on a complimentary basis for firm clients. Serving as a United States Magistrate Judge from 1987 to 2006, he has mediated thousands of cases and presided over numerous civil jury and bench trials, and criminal misdemeanor trials. He has negotiated multimillion-dollar settlements and resolved all manner of complex cases and class actions in the areas of employment law, commercial law, environmental law, intellectual property, antitrust, admiralty, civil rights, construction law and torts. He has also served as a Special Master in both state and federal courts, in matters involving mass torts, environmental issues, insurance coverage disputes, as well as a variety of class actions.

Rosen has a broad knowledge of criminal process and procedure in both the federal and state venues. He served as an assistant United States attorney and was the attorney-in-charge of the United States Attorney’s Office in Camden, New Jersey. During his tenure, he received several commendations from the Department of Justice for his efforts in connection with prosecutions involving organized crime and political corruption. He is also a former deputy attorney general in the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice where he was chief of the Special Prosecutions Section. He served as a law clerk to the Honorable Mitchell H. Cohen, Chief Judge, United States District Court, District of New Jersey.

Rosen is a former adjunct faculty member of Rutgers School of Law Camden, where he was a mentor to numerous law students. Rosen was a longtime member of the Disciplinary Oversight Committee of the New Jersey Supreme Court where he was appointed Vice-Chair by the New Jersey Supreme Court in December 2016.  Subsequently, Rosen became Chair of that committee.
