Stop Paying Three Advisors to Work in Silos: Why Your Lawyer, Accountant, and Financial Advisor Need to Talk

Your lawyer doesn’t know what your accountant just told you. Your financial advisor has never seen your operating agreement. A small business owner can hire the most talented professionals in their respective trades, but if those professionals do not communicate with one another on a cohesive strategy, it is the client who may ultimately suffer, whether through conflicting advice, missed opportunities, or expensive mistakes.
Many successful business owners we work with aren’t just well-represented; they’re well-coordinated. Here’s what that looks like in practice.
Choosing a business entity, bringing on a partner, buying real estate, planning for retirement: none of these decisions live in just one professional’s lane. They’re legal, financial, and tax decisions, all at once.
When your advisors actively communicate, you get a team that functions as a strategic unit, not three separate silos. The payoff can be real: smarter decisions, faster execution, and fewer blind spots.
THE BENEFITS OF A COHESIVE ADVISORY TEAM
Aligned strategy. Your entity choice affects your tax liability, which affects your retirement contributions, which in turn affects your estate plan.
Fewer gaps. Your financial advisor knows about the buy-sell agreement your lawyer just drafted. Your accountant understands the tax implications of your new insurance policy. Nothing slips through the cracks.
Faster decisions. Instead of playing telephone between three offices for weeks, a coordinated team gives you a unified recommendation in days.
Holistic protection. Your advisory team sees the full picture, your business and your personal financial life, not just the narrow slice relevant to their discipline.
THE RISKS OF WORKING IN SILOS
I’ve seen well-meaning professionals give advice in isolation that creates real problems. Here’s what misalignment looks like:
Conflicting advice that stalls decisions. Your lawyer recommends an LLC for liability
protection. Your accountant prefers an S-Corp for tax savings. Without a conversation between them, you’re stuck in the middle with no clear path forward.
Missed tax consequences. A business sale, partnership buyout, or real estate acquisition can carry significant tax implications. If your lawyer structures a deal without input from your accountant, you might face an unexpected tax bill that coordination would have avoided.
Coverage gaps after business changes. Forming a new entity, adding a partner, or signing a major lease all create risk exposures. If your financial advisor isn’t looped in, your insurance and financial planning may not match your current reality.
No buy-sell agreement when a co-owner dies. Suddenly your partner’s spouse owns half your business. Without a coordinated succession plan and funded buyout mechanism, a partnership dispute is nearly certain. Your lawyer, accountant, and financial advisor each hold a piece of this puzzle, and if they never talk, nobody assembles it until it’s too late. The consequences can be severe.
These aren’t hypotheticals. They’re situations I help business owners clean up, often at far greater expense than proactive coordination would have cost.
TAKE STOCK AND TAKE ACTION
This week, ask yourself: have your lawyer, accountant, and financial advisor ever spoken to each other about your business? If the answer is no, make an introduction. Schedule a joint call. Put all three in the same room (even virtually) and watch what happens when they start connecting the dots.
When evaluating any advisor, ask directly: How do you collaborate with a client’s other
professionals? Look for people who welcome that question.
Your business is too important to be managed in silos. Build a team that works together, so you can be better protected, better positioned, and better prepared.
The right time to align your advisory team is before your next big decision, not after. If you’re not sure where to start, we are happy to help:
